New York City, New York therapist: Kate E. Stephenson, life coach
Self Esteem

Kate E. Stephenson

Life Coach, ICF Professional Certified Coach (PCC), Holistic Life, Career & Executive
How do we come into confidence? One of the first questions I ask my clients is "what does confidence mean to you?" It never ceases to amaze me that each of us has a slightly different definition. What if your definition really doesn't have much to do with it at all? Everything I have learned as a certified professional Holistic Life Coach turned my own definition on it's head. I invite you to share with me what self esteem and confidence mean to you so that we can start to explore how you see yourself and your relation to others. I am NOT offering therapy—I leave the work of diagnosis and treatment of medical issues to medical professionals. However, coaching can absolutely complement and supplement the therapy work you are doing; our work together will be therapeutic without being therapy. I have a toolkit of fun methods and approaches to self esteem designed to help you question your own assumptions, internal unconscious agreements, and unacknowledged (perhaps limiting) beliefs to get to a place of awareness and insight—the place where confidence truly lives.

West Hollywood, California therapist: Dr. Ingrid Solano, psychologist

Dr. Ingrid Solano

Psychologist, PhD
I work with both adults and adolescents on an individual basis. Individual psychotherapy helps clients deal with particular issues, symptoms, and stressors. My goal is to provide a safe, non judgmental space for you to explore who you are, how you relate to others, and what supports you on your journey to become your best self. I lean into, listen, understand, and enhance authentic expression. Together we create a collaborative process of transformation. What that means and what that looks like is different for everyone... I offer evidence-based therapies from a curious, nonjudgmental philosophy. No matter where you have been, evidence-based therapies focus on changing the now. I strive to help my clients experience the world mindfully, and in accordance with their personal values. Through our work in cultivating an affirming, authentic, and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship, I provide support while we collaboratively deconstruct what is causing distress in your life and preventing you from being your most effective and authentic self. Individual therapy facilitates insight and growth, becoming more effective at actualizing your values, and building more authentic relationships with yourself and with others. While there are many forms of therapy you can pursue, my expertise is in time-limited, evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT), the Unified Protocol for emotional disorders, and third wave CBT such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness based interventions. (I do have experience in, and practice, an eclectic arrangement of other modalities as well-- when applicable or specifically requested.) We explore thoughts, beliefs, and understanding, while also prioritizing behavioral processes that focus on your contexts and the functions of how you relate to your internal experiences. CBT is designed to help individuals notice and shift their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to get relief from painful emotions such as anxiety and sadness. Third wave interventions also promote well-being through developing coping skills, personal values, and metacognition that complement traditional CBT interventions. I provide flexible, customizable approaches that look different with each patient. I empower my clients to discover their strength, clarity, creativity, autonomy, resilience, motivation, and confidence in meeting whatever happens next. I provide individualized tools to use in everyday decision-making that will help those changes last. With these modalities I treat individuals who are impacted by depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship distress, burnout, divorce, loss, uncertainty, stigma, and other life experiences, diagnoses, and stressors. We explore the sources, experiences, and beliefs that impact how you relate with the world and implement change in your life. You are the expert on you, but are you your most effective and content self?

Karen Baumstark, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., CMHIMP, CTACC
Low self esteem and a poor self image, which can get to a point for some people of self-hatred, erodes your life. In spite of achievements, you never feel good enough, and can't feel truly at peace. Because poor self esteem is often a lifelong problem, it can be very hard to resolve on your own. It is often related to trauma in childhood. When I work with clients who struggle with low self esteem, I want to understand how they came to the belief that they are generally not good enough. We also will look at how habits of thought, feeling, behavior, and self care may be reinforcing a negative self image, and work on making changes so a positive self image can be reinforced instead.

There is difference between Self Esteem and Self-Worth, though often used interchangeably. Building positive self esteem is how we evaluate ourselves. It is our internal assessment of our qualities and attributes. We have healthy self esteem when what we think, feel and believe about ourselves is honest and realistic. Unhealthy self esteem can lead to the trap of Narcissism. Low self-esteem is underestimating or ignoring your positive characteristics. Do you tell yourself that you are stupid, lazy, boring, selfish, or generally a bad person because of the things you think, say or do? Through various modalities and new learning, I will help you build skills of positive self-esteem and especially realize your intrinsic value, goodness and capabilities i.e. your Self-Worth. Low self-esteem can quietly shape how you see yourself, your relationships, and the choices you make. I work with individuals who struggle with self-doubt, negative self-talk, people-pleasing, and feeling “not good enough,” often despite being capable and accomplished. Therapy focuses on understanding where these patterns developed, challenging unhelpful beliefs, and building a more compassionate and realistic self-view. I talk about self-criticism, often how we express self-esteem, with all of my clients. Every. Single. One. We call ourselves things we would never call anyone else “disgusting, lazy, unworthy, embarrassing, ugly, stupid. The list goes on and on. Instead of metaphorically beating yourself up for beating yourself up (because that defeats the purpose right?) try some of these tips. ✔️ Try talking to yourself how you would talk to a best friend, small child, or a lovable pet. You can still challenge yourself but say it in a gentle way. “I know you are really tired but you are gonna feel better if you get up and make some breakfast.

Toronto, Ontario therapist: Jennifer Masters, life coach

Jennifer Masters

Life Coach, Ba Psychology, CF Thanatology, D Kessler – Grief Grief Coach Certif,M Devine – Grief Coach Certif
Grief can deeply affect self-esteem, especially when a griever begins questioning who they were to the person who died. Many people blame themselves after a death and wonder if they loved enough, visited enough, said enough, noticed enough, or should have done something differently. Caregivers may carry an even heavier burden, believing they should have been able to save the person they loved. I support adults through the guilt, regret, self-blame, and painful questions that can follow a loss. I acknowledge these thoughts and feelings by explaining that they make sense, that many grievers experience them, and that they are not proof of failure or a lack of love. I also provide plain-language grief education and practical tools to help clients manage these thoughts when they are triggered, so they can respond to themselves with more understanding instead of self-punishment.

Self-esteem issues can be tied to anxiety, and messages from others who influence us. But it also involves a fairly constant self-judgment, especially when comparing oneself to others- or how we think they are. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be very effective at helping people- teens, young adults, and adults- get out of the self-esteem trap and learn to harness that discernment and judgment in a helpful way.
