Dallas, Texas therapist: Jay Shaw, hypnotherapist
Sports

Jay Shaw

Hypnotherapist, CHt (Certified Hypnotherapist)
Athletic performance breaks down between the ears before it breaks down on the field. Choke moments, performance anxiety, inconsistency under pressure these are subconscious patterns, not skill gaps. I work with competitive athletes to rebuild the identity they compete from: new pressure responses, new pre-performance baselines, and a nervous system calibrated for execution when it counts most.

Andrea Elkon

Psychologist, Ph.D.
As a former collegiate volleyball and softball player, I understand that athletic performance incorporates so much more than physical training. I work with athletes who are struggling with anxiety, confidence, focus, or team dynamics. Additionally, I see athletes after they have experienced some major event in their athletic lives; such as acute and chronic injuries, pain, illness, or physical changes with aging. Athletes also struggle frequently with eating concerns and body image. Please feel free to reach out to me to learn more about my approach to treating sports-related performance.

Hypnotherapist, Certified Hypnotherapist, NLP Master Practitioner & Trainer, and Coach With 30+ Years of Experience
Top athletes know that physical ability is only part of performing at your best. What happens in your head — your Confidence, Focus, Expectations, Emotional State and ability to perform under pressure — can make an enormous difference when it matters most. Over the years, I’ve become kind of a “Secret Weapon” for athletes in a wide variety of sports, both here in Las Vegas and around the world. Sometimes an athlete comes to me because they’ve suddenly lost their confidence, started overthinking something they used to do naturally, developed a mental block, or simply feel like they’ve “Lost Their Mojo.” Other times, they’re already performing extremely well and want help Staying In The Zone, becoming even more mentally consistent, and continuing to take their performance to the next level. Using Hypnotherapy, NLP, Coaching, mental rehearsal, visualization and other advanced performance techniques, I help athletes train their mind to work with them rather than against them. We may work on Confidence, Focus, Motivation, performing under pressure, overcoming mental blocks, recovering after mistakes, quieting excessive thinking, creating stronger pre-performance states, or mentally rehearsing yourself performing exactly the way you want to perform. My approach goes far beyond simply giving you a pep talk or telling you to “think positively.” I teach you practical techniques you can actually use before, during and after competition to help you take greater control of your mental and emotional state. Many of the techniques I use come from the same world of NLP and peak-performance training that Tony Robbins has used in his work with Olympic athletes and other world-class performers. And one of my favorite things is helping an athlete who has temporarily Lost Their Mojo discover that it was never really gone — we just needed to help them find their way back to it. Ready to Get Your Mojo Back, Stay In The Zone and see how much better you can perform? Psychologist, Ph.D.
You had a good day. Work went well; you exercised; maybe even spent time with people you care about. Then you got home, noticed everything you had not done, opened your phone “for a minute,” and disappeared into comparison, research, or another plan to improve your life. By bedtime, the day no longer felt like enough. I work with thoughtful, driven folks, often ADHD or ADHD-ish, who look capable from the outside but feel restless, scattered, disconnected, or chronically behind. You may be successful and self-aware, yet exhausted from constantly trying to fix yourself. My approach is practical and collaborative, grounded in contextual behavioral science. We look beneath procrastination, distraction, burnout, and indecision to understand how these patterns developed and what keeps them going. Therapy is not another performance test. It is a place to rebuild self-trust and act from what matters—not shame, fear, or proving. I do not offer a final formula for what your life should be. I can help you slow the machinery down, recognize the rules that have been running you, and take the next honest step without abandoning yourself. If you have built a life that should feel meaningful but doesn't feel like home, contact me to see whether we're a good fit. I do not offer a final formula for what your life should be. La Quinta, California therapist: Stuart Hellebrand, M.S., C.Ht., hypnotherapist

Stuart Hellebrand, M.S., C.Ht.

Hypnotherapist
Hypnosis is a valuable tool for those seeking a competitive edge in sports performance. I have been involved with sports performance improvement since the 1970’s through my work with sports competitors to include recreational golfers, collegiate middle-distance runners and swimmers, marathon runners, and others. Noteworthy, among my clients, has been a CIF track and field champion, a swimmer on Cal Berkeley’s 2X national championship team, a collegiate middle-distance champion, and a marathoner who successfully completed the Mount Everest Marathon. Addressing the performance aspects of sports through hypnosis complements physical training and can lead to breakthrough performances. My use of hypnosis works by reprogramming negative self-talk, empowering performance through affirmations and guided imagery, boosting confidence, and reducing anxiety. In that pre-competition jitters or fear of failure can derail an athlete’s mindset, hypnosis employs subconscious relaxation techniques and guided imagery to reduce cortisol levels and promote a calm composed state of mind, while fostering a winning attitude. Studies have shown the efficacy of hypnosis in sports. For example, a 2016 review in the International Journal of Sports Science highlighted significant performance improvements in athletes who used hypnosis compared to those who did not. Those who used hypnosis reported better focus, reduced pre-competition anxiety, and enhanced execution of skills after hypnosis sessions. In sports performance counseling, my use of hypnosis facilitates vivid mental imagery, allowing athletes to visualize successful performance. Research has shown that mental rehearsal can strengthen neural pathways, helping the body to perform as if it has already achieved the desired outcome. Using hypnotic relaxation to tap into an athlete’s subconscious allows the competitor to tap into their commitment to training, discipline, and goal achievement in a stress-free manner.

Minneapolis, Minnesota therapist: Dr. Meghan Miller, psychologist

Dr. Meghan Miller

Psychologist, PsyD, LP
As both a clinical psychologist and someone deeply embedded in sport culture, I work with athletes navigating both performance goals and mental health concerns. Sports psychology is not only about optimizing performance under pressure, improving focus, or strengthening confidence. It also includes addressing anxiety, burnout, identity struggles, injury recovery, depression, and the clinical needs that often go unspoken in competitive environments. I integrate evidence-based therapies such as CBT and ACT to help athletes regulate emotions, manage performance pressure, and build resilience while also attending to underlying mental health concerns. My approach supports the whole person, not just the athlete, so success is sustainable both on and off the field.
