When you’re caught in a cycle of self-criticism and comparison, it can feel impossible to feel at home in your own skin. Body image struggles are about more than appearance—they touch self-worth, identity, and how you move through the world. In therapy, we’ll work on quieting the inner critic, building self-compassion, and shifting focus from appearance to overall well-being. Body image work isn't about learning to love what you see in the mirror. It's about understanding the relationship between your body, your history, and the world you've had to navigate. I work with clients untangling shame, disconnection, and the ways they've learned to manage how they take up space. We go slow, and we don't treat your body as a problem to be fixed.

Perceptions of one’s physical self is a very personal and individual experience. Sometimes we focus so intently on the image we see when we look in the mirror that we can forget all of the positive qualities we possess. We can start to devalue ourselves and place all of our worth on our physical appearance. When working with clients who are struggling with body image, I will ask them to focus on other qualities, abilities and strengths they possess separate from their physical self. Starting to see ourselves in a more balanced way can increase positive self-image. We will also try to determine where the negative thoughts and messages come from and use CBT to reframe those thoughts in a more self-accepting light. Please book a free consultation if this sounds like it may be helpful for you.

Adrienne Sharma-Richardson PhD MEd RP OCT
Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Gestalt Psychotherapist Somatic Experiencing Practitioner Gottman Trained Couples Therapist
I have borrowed Andrew Seuber's approach to working with a negative body image, that is from the inside out.
He suggests that "The negative image is understood as a dissociated and shame-based “part” of the personality in need of understanding and compassion, achieved via mindful awareness, “parts” dialogue and trauma processing.
The first step is to create healthy separation between the "observing" or aware Self and the part(s) absorbed in the eating disorder via mindful awareness.
Once this separation between the "whole" self and part of self is established, the Gestalt polarity tradition (empty chairs) is utilized to develop understanding of the shame-based part.
Understanding leads to compassion for the eating disordered part from a non-enmeshed state of consciousness, aka the aware self, the experiencing self, the observing self.
Healing of the eating disordered part occurs when that part no longer feels exiled as a "not-I" and is assisted in processing the traumatic roots of the disorder."

Registered Psychotherapist, RP
The relationship we hold with our body is deeply personal and can be challenging at times. When working with body image, it may be helpful to explore how external systems and socio-cultural narratives flood our perceptions about ourselves and our bodies. We can work to deconstruct these ideas that are no longer serving you and reach a place of healing where true love and respect for your body becomes a reality. Please contact me for a free consultation to learn more about my approach and to determine if we would be a good fit.

Body Image is our feelings and thoughts regarding how we look. A healthy or unhealthy body image is independent of how one actually looks. It’s often affected by media, culture, upbringing and social circles.
I work with my clients on understanding the reasons behind having an unhealthy self-image while gaining awareness on what a healthy body image looks like and working towards acquiring a healthier perspective.
