Shareen Birges

Registered Social Worker, BASS, GDYMH, MSW
Working with teens & their families has given me extensive experience in supporting parents. This has included providing information & knowledge on how best to support their parenting. Every parent does the best they can & the guidance I provide is centered around how parents they can adapt & improve their parenting rather than blaming or criticizing. Its important that parents feel comfortable to work with me in a collaborative way otherwise their is no room for change so I focus on building a relationship with parents where they feel safe and comfortable to share experiences and work with me. No parent is perfect & usually working in improving parenting is about learning how best to support your kids & their individual, & collective, needs.

Sydney, New South Wales therapist: Irene Valis, counselor/therapist
Parenting

Irene Valis

Counsellor/Therapist, Gestalt Psychotherapist, PACFA Certified Counsellor, Life Coach
As a wife, mother and daughter, I resonate with the joys and challenges of parenting. I tried so hard to be a good mum that eventually I lost my way a little and made child-rearing like a mission to accomplish rather than a journey to be savoured and experienced. This awareness led me to seek support and put the oxygen-mask on as they say. Now my parenting experience has completely shifted, it is a lot more relaxed, satisfying and fun - and my children and husband feel it too. My mission is to nurture and support other women who are mothers or are planning to be mothers to foster and engage in safe, respectful and loving relationships first within themselves and in turn their children and their family. I also support mothers who have recently become empty-nesters and grappling with a sense of loss of identity and purpose.

Well, no one said it would be easy. Or did they? If so, they were wrong (or on autopilot). Its joys are limitless. Its challenges are both great and infinitely various. Sometimes the issues are about couples clarifying differing parenting styles in order to support each other and their children. Sometimes the chid or children present particular difficulties. Sometimes the burden falls on a single parent: what a shame that it is a burden. Where can support come from? Sometimes schools and other statutory services can offer obstacles rather than assistance…. I also offer Family Constellations. I was a youth and community worker, as well as being a parent, and have worked with families with autistic children and those on the Asperger’s spectrum. Ask, and we’ll see if I can help. If not, I will find someone who can.

Parents are not always able to guess their children need. A major reason why children and adolescents often experience difficulty with developing individuality in their emotional growth, is the need for self-validation, self-expression and boundaries in discovering the difference in right & wrong.

A mother needs to be only good enough, said the brilliant Winnicott many years ago. We, as parents, will never be perfect. But we need only to be good enough. I can help you learn how to be the best version of yourself with your kids which includes really understanding what children in general, and your child in particular, need and needs. And what you need too which sometimes, if not often, gets forgotten in this dynamic.

Parenting is the most difficult job in the world. (And step-parenting even more difficult than this.) Most parents know that there is no one right way to parent, but there are many wrong ways! If parenting is challenging for you, you are not alone. Without judgement, we will explore how to parent more effectively and, if you are carrying feelings and behaviours from your own childhood that are interfering with your good enough parenting, we will identify and resolve these.

London, England therapist: Louise Perry, registered psychotherapist
Parenting

Louise Perry

Registered Psychotherapist, IFS UKCP HCCP
I work with adults navigating the emotional and psychological demands of parenting, including those parenting alone or alongside other significant pressures. Parenting often brings long-standing patterns into sharper focus, affecting identity, relationships, boundaries, and how people respond under stress. My work draws on Integrative Art Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), offering ways to explore how parenting experiences interact with internal expectations, responsibilities, and emotional load. Rather than focusing on parenting techniques, sessions centre on understanding how you are impacted by the role and how different parts of you respond to it. We may work through conversation, creative exploration, or a combination of both, depending on what feels most useful.
