Since I am not a licensed therapist, I'm not allowed to diagnose conditions such as Depression. This is a term that is often thrown around quite readily and clients often state they suffer from depression, whether or not they have been formally diagnosed by a therapist in the past. Generally, it is a rather broad diagnosis covering a wide range of behaviors. For hypnotists, many of these behaviors are simply a negative habit of mind that we can change, neutralizing many of the past traumas that have led to their problems. I have worked with many such clients, however. In many cases my clients have been in therapy for years, even decades, and while they understood the roots of their feelings, they got no relief. One of my earliest clients was a woman who suffered tremendous emotional abuse as a child and grew up with a crushing feeling of worthlessness. She became grossly overweight and worked at menial jobs her whole life, unable to form any successful and satisfying relationships. Through hypnosis, she was able to lose 170 pounds and after one session focused on her past trauma, she was so lightened of her lifelong burden of self loathing that she practically floated out of my office and she insisted on paying me double my fee. She has been free of her burdens now for 5 years and comes in once a year for a refresher session. I have had many such results in my practice.

While depression isn't my primary focus a recent meta-analysis (study combining many studies) proved that focusing on treating worry and anxiety relieves depression as much as targeting it directly. My unique and simple approach to cognitive therapy for anxiety applies equally well to depression. Nonetheless, when we used relaxation only, to target worry and anxiety, it lifted depression as much as those groups who used cognitive therapy. However, if you are so depressed that you have recently contemplated suicide, I suggest you see someone in a group practice or someone who is willing to take emergency calls 24/7 because I do not do that.

Psychologist, Ph.D.
Over the years, I’ve seen many people move from feeling stuck, depleted, or hopeless to rediscovering energy, purpose, and a renewed sense of connection with life. While being depressed can feel like being trapped in a deep hole, therapy can serve as the ladder—together, we climb it step by step, helping you find your way back to a fuller, more vibrant life. Time and again, I’ve witnessed the power of momentum: how small, consistent steps can build upon each other to create profound and lasting change. Sometimes all it takes is the courage to take that first step.

Many clients experience sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, low motivation and fatigue, changes in appetite and sleep, and may also have thoughts of death. Integrative mental health explores not only symptoms and how you feel, but will help you expand your understanding of what contributes to your underlying depression and how to naturally improve it whenever possible. Dr. Nelson uses Integrative mental health that addresses brain health which is directly influenced by biological factors, psychological factors, social factors, and spiritual factors. Dr. Nelson will help you explore these four areas and ways to improve your brain health.

Depression has been referred to as, “The Black Dog.” It can be all consuming and requires a compassionate approach. Sometimes it is helpful to involve a psychiatrist to see if medication might be useful, but this is not always the case.

Depression isn’t just sadness—it can feel like a fog that dulls your motivation, isolates you from others, and makes even simple tasks feel insurmountable. Whether you're experiencing persistent low mood, burnout, or a loss of purpose, I offer a structured, evidence-based approach to help you reconnect with meaning and momentum. My treatment integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Behavioral Activation, and Schema Therapy to address both the symptoms and the underlying patterns that sustain depression. We’ll explore how your thoughts, behaviors, and core beliefs interact—and develop practical strategies to restore energy, engagement, and emotional clarity. For clients navigating complex transitions or existential concerns, I also incorporate Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and values-based decision tools. Therapy is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to your strengths. Whether you're a healthcare professional, entrepreneur, or someone quietly struggling behind a high-functioning exterior, we’ll build a roadmap that supports both immediate relief and long-term resilience.

Depression can make life feel heavy, muted, or harder to manage, even when you are doing your best to keep going. It may show up as low motivation, sadness, irritability, isolation, self-doubt, exhaustion, or feeling disconnected from yourself and others. In therapy, I help clients explore the patterns, relationships, losses, pressures, and inner stories that may be contributing to depression. My style is warm, practical, sometimes humorous, and grounded in real life. Using approaches such as ACT and CBT, we work together to build insight, restore a sense of direction, and reconnect with the values, relationships, and daily practices that support healing.

I specialize in supporting individuals struggling with depression by helping them understand and manage their symptoms. Through evidence-based approaches like CBT, mindfulness, and behavioral activation, I help people challenge negative thought patterns, improve their mood, and develop healthy coping strategies. My goal is to support individuals in finding ways to increase their motivation, reconnect with activities they enjoy, and build a stronger sense of well-being. Referrals for medication management, if desired, are made to local prescribing providers. Treatment resistant depression, although rare, is referred to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), ketamine therapy, and/or other psychedelic psychotherapy options if locally available.
