Therapist, MIBWRT(AC and Coach, TFT DX, NLP Practioner and Coach, Hypnotherapist
Trauma can leave lasting imprints on the brain and body, showing up as anxiety, flashbacks, hypervigilance, or a sense of being stuck in the past. Healing is possible—your nervous system can be guided back into balance. In our work together, I use evidence-based approaches such as BWRT® and neuroscience-based therapies to gently release trauma patterns at their root. I also integrate HeartMath® techniques, which help regulate the stress response, restore heart–brain coherence, and build resilience. The goal is not to erase what happened, but to help you feel safer in yourself, regain control, and move forward with greater calm and strength.

Trauma isn't what happened to you—it's what's still happening inside you because of what happened. It's the hypervigilance that won't turn off. The flashbacks or nightmares. The way certain sounds, smells, or situations throw you right back. Your body holding onto something your mind is trying to forget.
PTSD gets diagnosed when these symptoms meet clinical criteria, but plenty of people carry trauma that never gets labeled. Either way, your nervous system is still responding to a threat that's no longer there. That's what we need to address.
I've spent 35 years working with adults carrying childhood trauma—abuse, neglect, households where you never felt safe. But trauma can also come from single events: accidents, assaults, losses. What matters isn't comparing severity—what matters is that your system got overwhelmed and is still stuck in that survival response.
We work carefully and at your pace. I use approaches like Schema Therapy, IFS, Somatic Experiencing, DBT—whatever actually helps your nervous system understand the danger is over. This isn't about reliving everything in detail. It's about processing what happened in a way that lets your body finally rest.
You're not broken. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do to keep you alive. We can help it learn something different.

In many cases, but not all, a traumatic imprint leaves a following stress disorder, which sit in one's life until another force meets it and can change it. Developmental trauma from early childhood and also recent shock trauma, both can be hard to regulate on one's own. Nowadays trauma therapy offers many different ways and views to work through the body. The very good news is that you do not need to dive back into the trauma or its story but we can release the psychosomatic disorders from the soma of the body. Over the past 25 years I have thoroughly studied and also met some of the leading heads of trauma therapy. I am not certified for a professional hat but work in accordance with the insights of SE, Developmental Trauma, NARM, Poly Vagal Theory and IFS. My husband Sudeva is certified, if you prefer to work with someone who actually wears the professional hat, look at his profile here on Therapy Tribe.

Trauma is the buzzword is the therapeutic world at the moment, and about time too. Trauma research has shown that trauma in early life can contribute to a host of mental and physical health challenges throughout our lives and needs
I adapt a somatic, psych-spiritual approach to trauma rather than a cognitive approach. We heal trauma through the body, by reconnecting with the body and learning to feel safe with our feelings and emotions.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are unfortunately way more common than many people think. A strong link has been found my many studies between ACEs and physical and mental health problems in later life. Traumatic experiences can also take place in adolescence and adulthood. For some, the impact is greatly distressing and life-limiting, such as in the cases of having post-traumatic-stress disorder.
Many of the people I have come to work with have lived through often multiple adversities and traumatic experiences, throughout their lives. I offer a confidential space where we can think together about the way such experiences have affected you and the parts of you that can change and develop in order to integrate and move on from past traumas.

PHOBIAS, PANIC ATTACKS AND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS
The brain has an emotional alarm system designed to keep us safe. When people suffer from panic attacks, phobias or post-traumatic stress, it is because the system has gone into overdrive.
What happens is this. There is a small, structure in the brain, known as the amygdala (Greek for almond, which is its shape), that has access to our emotional memories and learned responses. It evolved in the distant past and its job is to match new circumstances to what is already in the store and alert us to anything that previously represented a risk and might do so again. In the distant past, this might have been a movement or flash of colour that could have signified an approaching predator. The amygdala would then have triggered changes to help the body get ready to fight or flee the danger – pounding heart, racing pulse, quick, shallow breathing, etc.
Now imagine this. A young woman, who has had a highly stressful day, is waiting in a long supermarket queue, worrying whether she’ll be out of the shop in time to catch the bus to school to collect her little girl. It is one pressure too many. The amygdala responds as if she is under threat and she starts to feel her heart pounding strangely and her breathing quickens. She becomes terrified that she is having a heart attack and that makes the symptoms escalate – her palms sweat; her chest feels as if it is bursting and she struggles to breathe. Soon she feels overwhelmed and may collapse or run out of the shop. The amygdala, fearful that this could happen again, files away the fact that there were bright lights and lots of people queuing when the ‘threat’ occurred. Then, when the woman is queuing in the post office the next day, the bright lights and queue may be sufficient for the over-vigilant amygdala to trigger another panic attack to deal with the new ‘threat’.
Phobias start the same way – the amygdala makes associations with what was going on when a person first felt threatened, not all of which may be relevant. So, while it is understandable that someone who is attacked by a vicious dog may well develop a fear of dogs generally, it could equally be the case that someone develops a fear of broken glass because, on a previous occasion, when they had had a panic attack, there was broken glass lying near to where they collapsed. Agoraphobia develops when someone is too frightened of panic attacks even to leave the house.
In the case of post-traumatic stress, someone who was in the back seat of a car when a collision occurred may find it frightening to travel in the back seat again but there may be other, unconscious, connections with the accident too, such as the smell of petrol. So the person may experience seemingly inexplicable panic when filling up their own car with petrol.
Fortunately, human givens practitioners are taught a simple and effective way to deal with all these circumstances. If a traumatic memory is causing panic attacks, phobias or post-traumatic stress, they can use a powerful, painless visualisation procedure, known as the rewind technique, to take the emotion out of the memory and enable the memory of the event to be stored away as history, instead of as one that continues to intrude on the present. The memory remains, and always will remain, a deeply unpleasant one but no longer is it emotionally arousing. This method can work swiftly and reliably even in the most extreme of cases.

Trauma is the emotional wound that is created in response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event such as the loss of a loved one, or perhaps suffering an accident, abuse or surviving a natural disaster. Equally trauma can result from the drip, drip, drip of negative or abusive circumstances outside our control, that impact our sense of safety, trust and ‘okay-ness’ in the world around us. The emotional impact of trauma can result in long term physical and mental symptoms that make it difficult to function in our everyday lives. It wreaks havoc with our relationships with others. Depression and anxiety very often result from the experience of trauma. Talking therapy can help us to validate our experiences and the feelings, or denial of feelings, that go hand in hand with trauma. In time we can hopefully reframe what causes us to suffer and develop skills to cope, so that we can move forward in our lives.

I help people who have experienced trauma or PTSD feel safe, supported, and empowered to reclaim their lives. Trauma can live in the body and nervous system long after the events have passed, affecting how we think, feel, and relate to the world. Using integrative, trauma-informed approaches — including hypnotherapy, breathwork, meditation, and gentle somatic techniques — I help you process and release stored tension, build resilience, and restore a sense of safety and agency. Together, we create a pathway toward healing that is paced, compassionate, and deeply personal.

Trauma is foundational to a wide variety of distress and is most resistant to change if experienced in early childhood. PTSD severity is inked to childhood trauma and should be understood in that context.

Shareen Birges
Registered Social Worker, BASS, GDYMH, MSW
I have an extensive background in trauma through my work with young people & adults around sexual abuse/assault, domestic violence & childhood trauma/neglect. My trauma informed practice gives me the basis for understanding & supporting people through trauma. My experience has helped me to understand that trauma is a very unique & individualized experience. For some people, trauma can appear small or unimportant (like a car accident) however to me, all trauma is experienced by the individual as traumatic for them, so whether it is perceived by others as small or unimportant it is important, & valid, for the person for whom the experience was traumatic. I have found that this understanding has been vital in my trauma work & has helped me to support people with all types of trauma. Building the therapeutic relationship, again, is important in this work to create a collaborative, safe & comfortable environment for my clients to share & heal.

Traumatic events can lead to sleeplessness, flashbacks, anxiety, depression or other symptoms in our bodies, in our way of relating to others, and in our habits. We can work somatically- which means that you won't have to rehash all of the most difficult events. We can work with the tools of somatic experiencing: grounding, finding resources, and getting re-oriented to the here and now so that your body, your emotions and thoughts can restore safety. Get in touch and we can discuss- in a gentle and non-invasive way- how we might work together to help you feel some relief from past traumatic events.

Emma Poxon
Counsellor/Therapist, MA Person-Centred Experiential Counselling
Trauma is an incredibly painful thing to experience, as your therapist I am here to be with you, reminding you that you are not alone. We can explore what you have experienced without fear of it being "too much". Therapy is a space wherein you can say and do anything, and I am here to be your support throughout this, allowing the pain to have a space to dissipate in. You are not a problem to be fixed, my aim as your therapist is to try to provide the right conditions to allow you to explore whatever you want to bring to therapy to support your growth. This isn't a therapeutic approach wherein I will set a treatment plan or tell you what to do. We will work together as a partnership rather than me taking away your autonomy. I absolutely love the work I do, it is the biggest privilege being let into people’s personal worlds and seeing the immense growth of my clients. I hope to hear from you soon!
