When You’re Exhausted From Walking on Eggshells: How Online Counselling Can Help You Heal From Narcissistic Emotional Abuse

Virginia Purcell

For many high-achieving, capable people, emotional abuse doesn’t look like the stereotypes. From the outside things can seem quiet, civilized and calm. There are no dramatic scenes or obvious cruelty.

But you notice yourself :

  • In constant self-doubt and second-guessing yourself

  • Apologizing even when you didn’t do anything wrong

  • Feeling responsible for someone else’s moods

  • Being continually blamed, corrected, or subtly criticized

  • Feeling small, unseen, or “not enough” .

  • Walking on eggshells to avoid conflict

If this feels familiar, you may be experiencing narcissistic emotional abuse.  It’s a pattern of control, invalidation, and psychological manipulation that slowly erodes confidence, identity, and emotional safety.  It can happen in partner relationships, in families or at work. It is often so subtle, layered and complex that it can be hard to explain or understand.

You don’t have to keep carrying this alone. Healing is possible and many people find that online counselling is one of the safest, most supportive ways to begin.

What Narcissistic Emotional Abuse Can Look Like (Even If Everything Seems “Fine” On the Surface)

Narcissistic behaviour often shows up in subtle, confusing ways. It may include:

  • Gaslighting – rewriting history or denying your reality

  • Blame-shifting – every issue becomes your fault

  • Love-bombing followed by withdrawal – being placed on a pedestal, continually praised, and then suddenly ignored, criticized, excluded

  • Criticism disguised as “helpful feedback”

  • Silent treatment, coldness, or emotional shutdown –

  • Jealousy, control, or monitoring behaviours

Over time, you may begin to feel:

  • Numb, anxious, or constantly on alert

  • Unsure of yourself, unsure of what you feel or believe

  • Disconnected from friends, family, or colleagues

  • Wanting space, fairness, or respect

These can be signs that your nervous system has been living in chronic stress and emotional survival mode.

Why Many People Choose Online Counselling for Narcissistic Abuse Recovery

When you’re living in a stressful or emotionally controlling environment, accessing support can feel risky or overwhelming. Online therapy creates a space that feels:

  • Private and discreet – you can meet from your car, office, or a quiet room at home

  • Accessible – no travel time, no explaining where you’re going

  • Grounding – you can be in a familiar environment while processing

  • Flexible – easier to fit around work, parenting, or unpredictable schedules

Clients often share that meeting online helps them feel safer and more in control of their healing process.

What Our Work Together Can Focus On

Every recovery journey is unique. In counselling, we may work on:

  • Understanding emotional manipulation and control patterns

  • Rebuilding self-trust, confidence, and identity

  • Strengthening boundaries without guilt or shame

  • Processing grief, confusion, anger, or betrayal

  • Learning nervous-system regulation and grounding skills

  • Exploring safe next steps -  whether that means staying, creating distance, or leaving at your own pace

This isn’t about telling you what you “should” do.

It’s about helping you feel clear, grounded, supported, and emotionally strong again.

You’re Not Overreacting. Your Experience Matters

If you’ve been minimizing what you’re going through, telling yourself:

“It’s not that bad.”
“I should be stronger.”
“Other people have it worse.”

Please know that emotional harm does not have to be dramatic to be real.

You deserve relationships where you feel safe, respected, heard, and valued.

Counselling can be the first step back to that sense of wholeness and self-worth.
