Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
When a person’s concerns regarding their appearance become obsessive it can lead to a diagnosis of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. With this condition, an individual is beset by constant preoccupation with what they perceive as their physical flaws or defects. Symptoms can include excessive grooming, frequent mirror checking, skin picking, needing constant assurance about how they look, avoiding social situations, and in worse cases, eating disorders and suicidal thoughts. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts common in this condition, please call a mental health professional or call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeling. Anxiety, substance abuse, and physical pain from repeated surgical interventions can also be experienced. Psychotherapy is an effective approach to this condition and if medication is needed, I work with a psychiatrist who can provide what is necessary. Often, this condition begins in adolescence and long-term support may be needed into adulthood to prevent relapse. My regular free zoom workshops provide a way for potential clients to get acquainted with me and experience the effectiveness of some of my therepeutic approaches. Please feel free to call for a consultation: 301-229-8000

Karla Lawrence

Counselor/Therapist, LCPC, BC-TMH, CPC
Do you spend a lot of time criticizing or worrying about your body and how you look? Are your thoughts often consumed with finding clothes that hide the parts of your body you feel are somehow "wrong" or "unacceptable?" Do you try to use food and/or exercise to control and change the shape and size of your body? Do you think that once you get down or up to "X" weight you will finally feel like you are enough? If you are ready to learn how to make peace with your body and food, counseling can help. You want to figure out how to feel good in the body you have, but don't know where to start -- or if it's even possible. We will work together from a Health at Every Size (HAES) framework so you can redefine your relationship with your body. We will unpack the internalized and external messages that have shaped your beliefs about your body. You will learn how to hear and "trust your gut" again. You will learn how to develop a relationship with food and movement that feels like support vs. punishment. Compassion vs. judgement. If you are ready to finally call a truce with the war on your body, then I would love to help.

Charlotte, North Carolina therapist: Kristina Peck, psychologist

Kristina Peck

Psychologist, Licensed Psychologist
If you’re constantly at war with your reflection or caught in a cycle of self-criticism, you’re not alone. We live in a world full of unrealistic standards and loud opinions about how we should look—and it can take a real toll on how we feel in our own skin. I work with clients to untangle their relationship with their bodies using compassion-based therapy, mindfulness practices, and Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed work. My approach isn’t about “fixing” your body—it’s about healing how you relate to it. We’ll explore where the harsh inner voice came from, learn to quiet it, and reconnect you with the values and experiences that matter far more than a number on a scale or the shape of a mirror image. As a long-time psychologist (and a human in this culture too), I know that body image struggles are deeply personal—and deeply valid. I bring humor, warmth, and evidence-based tools to help you move toward body respect, self-compassion, and a healthier, more peaceful relationship with yourself. You deserve to feel at home in your body—and I’d be honored to help you find your way back there.

The embodied self is a psychospiritual concept that hosts existential questions of “Who am I? What am I? Where does my value lay?” Our relationship with our bodies can be fraught with neglect and dissociation as we learn to ignore the many messages it sends to us. The embodied self can be experienced in a positive or negative manner, and it is strongly related to self-esteem, self-image, and one’s satisfaction with personal and sexual intimacy. A positive sense of an embodied self is associated with autonomy, functionality, joy and fulfillment. However, chronic illness, disability and accidents, and negative social sanctions can result in a sense of disembodiment. Call our office for more detailed information.
