Licensed Professional Counselor, LGPC, NCC
Relationships can be challenging, and when we feel disconnected from those closest to us, it can be especially painful. I work with couples that want to build or strengthen their connection and feel more secure in their relationships. I have additional training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, which is an evidence-based approach that is based on attachment theory. I can help you identify the negative cycles you get in as a couple and build new ways of communicating that trust and connection. I love to help couples become each other safe secure base and soft place to fall.

Dr. Susan L. Waldo
Psychologist, PhD
One of my very favorite therapies is couples therapy. I so enjoy helping couple restore their love and relationship. I work with the couple (first) and with each individual when engaged couples work. I help each partner rediscover or get to know themselves and help them resolve pains from the past that may be negatively impacting their relationship. If either partner has suffered physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; neglect; has been a crime victim, or a victim of tragedy or natural disaster, I will help them resolve the impacts on their relationships. Work with the couple often includes work on communication, compatibility, having fun and dates, social time with others, kindnesses and responsiveness to one’s partner, level of engagement in the relationship, dependability, honesty, affection, sexual intimacy, children, finances, and in-laws. Also, any problems in the relationship are addressed including: drug/alcohol abuse, addictions of any kind (I.e. internet, sex, shopping, gambling), domestic violence (physical, sexual, or emotional), or other challenging behaviors.

Psychologist, PsyD
My work with couples often focuses on finding the underlying conflict and/or unmet needs that can end up festering and eroding the foundation of the relationship. I help each partner discover these needs and communicate in more accurate and productive ways. This can help each other genuinely want to understand and meet each other's needs, instead of deny/defend patterns that may exist. In cases of various forms of infidelity, after the direction and goal of therapy is explored, we may examine conditions that led to the behavior and learn from them to build a stronger and healthy relationship. Moreover, this process can help toward establishing long term forgiveness and trust. It can be surprising what is possible to overcome and how much better things can be.

Couples argue about many things, and it's normal to have disagreements. What you do at those times will determine whether your relationship will survive. Learning how to communicate effectively, from a position of love and respect, is my main focus when working with couples.

Relationships and couples/marriage counseling is one of the main reasons people seek therapy. Attachment research is clear about our need as human to connect with and have a loving relationship with another that is mutual and reciprocal.

Relationship issues cover a vast array of areas in our lives. We have relationships with our immediate families, extended families, friends, romantic partners, co-workers, and supervisors -- just to name a few! At times, these relationships can become complex, or even toxic to our well-being. Understanding how to best navigate your current relationships, and even uncover patterns of relating, can greatly improve your relationships and reduce overall stress in your life.

The Interpersonal Flexibility Circle is a great way to explore our relationships. Given that I developed that method, relationship counseling can take on a logic and patterns that can make more sense than in the past. It is so important to recognize how old experiences impact our present, so I will help couples to share old experiences that are impacting their current relationship. I belong to a group called Marriage Friendly Therapists. I have also been divorced, but am in a 25 year relationship now, so I am thankful for what my life experience teaches me.

Every relationship has its challenges. Sometimes it takes an outside person to help you and your partner work through these challenges in an empathic and objective way. I use techniques that have been proven to work. Together, we will create a trusting and safe environment where you and your partner can talk openly about the issues that divide you. I don’t take sides or place blame. Instead, I work to understand each of you as individuals and as a couple. Our work will focus on building better communication skills, having more positive experiences as a couple, and coping more effectively with challenges. Together, you and your partner can build a stronger relationship.

Psychologist, Psy.D.
I specialize in providing couples therapy services that are designed to heal, nurture, and revitalize your relationship. Whether you are experiencing conflicts, struggling with trust issues, or simply looking to enhance your emotional connection, as an experienced therapist, I am here to guide you on this journey of growth and rediscovery. My approach to working with those in a partnership emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and personal growth. Just like the metaphor of putting on your own oxygen mask first, I highlight the significance of taking care of oneself before attending to others. This approach acknowledges that individuals have control over themselves and their actions, and it encourages one to reflect on their emotional state and how they contribute to the relationship.

Relationships are central to knowing who we are and thus have an enormous impact on our mental health. We often downplay to ourselves that frequent or underlying problems in our relationships are "enough" to feel anxious, sad, or angry about. As a result we often misplace the source of distress solely upon personal failings. Much of my work focuses on helping you clarify what you want and need relationally, working out what is making it hard to communicate those wants and needs, and empowering you to try some new things with your loved ones.
