At Olive Tree Psychology Clinic LLC, we understand that chronic illness and persistent pain are not just physical experiences, they impact every facet of your life, from your emotional well-being to your relationships and cultural identity. Our approach focuses on breaking the "pain-stress cycle" by helping you differentiate between physical pain and the psychological suffering that often accompanies it. We empower you to regain a sense of agency, even when your body feels unpredictable. We provide a space to process the grief of health changes while teaching practical mindfulness and coping techniques to improve your quality of life. Chronic Pain

Dyani Saxby

Psychologist, Ph.D., ABPP, DBSM
There is a difference between living with chronic pain and suffering with it. Suffering includes depression, unresolved grief, anxiety, isolation, and withdrawal. Chronic pain can cause these feelings because we grieve what we used to be able to do and feel that pain robs us of living a full life. Sometimes we feel like we lose ourselves entirely. When we are in a depressed or anxious mood state for a long period of time, we actually end up experiencing worse pain (and often worse sleep), which results in a vicious cycle that can feel impossible to break. The good news is that I have helped hundreds of patients improve how they respond to their pain and also lower their overall pain levels. They began to accept what they cannot control and also learn how to have more control over their pain levels through techniques such as physical pacing, relaxation, and clinical hypnosis. With board certifications in clinical health psychology, behavioral sleep medicine, and extensive training in clinical hypnosis, I can teach you skills to break the cycle of chronic pain and suffering.

Chronic pain is a condition that affects multiple aspects of a person's life and can exacerbate both depression and anxiety symptoms. I use cognitive-behavioral therapy for chronic pain to improve one's quality of life by accepting the reality of having pain in your life and learning how to move forward it. In addition, a client will learn several relaxation and cognitive skills to reduce and manage the pain as best as possible in conjunction with your current medical treatment plan.

Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Chronic Pain

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
I work with people whose lives have been shaped by their bodies in ways they did not choose. This may include serious or long‑term illness, chronic pain, complex diagnoses or diagnostic uncertainty, and the lingering impact of medical procedures and hospitalizations. For some, there is also medical trauma or other trauma woven in. For others, the ongoing symptoms themselves are what feel overwhelming. Many of the adults, teens, and children I see look like they are managing from the outside. They keep up with school, work, or family responsibilities and often minimize what they are going through. Inside, there may be fear, grief, anger, exhaustion, or a sense of watching life move on without them. I often work with people who are trying to navigate medical, school, or workplace systems that feel unsupportive, confusing, or exhausting, and to live a life that makes sense when very few people seem to understand what it is really like. My work is not general support for illness. I focus on how pain, illness, and medical experiences live in the nervous system and shape mood, relationships, daily life, and sense of self. We make space for the very real impact of ongoing pain or fatigue, adjusting to new diagnoses or changes in functioning, repeated medical procedures or hospital stays, encounters with dismissive or disbelieving providers, and the losses and changes that come with a life that is different from what was expected. Together, we work with your body’s responses to what has happened, the stress of navigating care and systems, and the question of how to move forward in a way that feels possible for you. Supporting people whose lives have been shaped by illness and pain is central to my practice, and I have deep respect for how much you carry that others often cannot see.

Hypnotherapy for Chronic Pain & Illness: Find Relief, Restore Balance Living with chronic pain or illness can feel exhausting, frustrating, and at times, overwhelming. When pain takes over, it can impact not only your body but also your mind, emotions, and overall well-being. But what if you could train your mind to experience relief, comfort, and control? Hypnotherapy is a powerful, natural approach that works with your subconscious mind to reduce pain perception, manage stress, and support healing. Through guided hypnosis, you can: ✔ Ease Physical Discomfort – Retrain the brain’s response to pain and tension. ✔ Promote Relaxation & Healing – Reduce stress and enhance the body's natural ability to heal. ✔ Regain Control Over Your Experience – Feel empowered instead of powerless over pain. ✔ Improve Sleep & Energy Levels – Break the cycle of pain, fatigue, and stress. Pain is not just physical—it has a mental and emotional component, too. By addressing it at all levels, hypnotherapy can help you experience greater relief, resilience, and peace. Our counseling services aim to provide a nurturing space where you can find the support, strategies, and strength to navigate your journey with dignity, courage, and hope.
