If you’re a highly sensitive person, you’ve probably been told you’re “too much” or “too emotional” more times than you can count. You feel things deeply — beauty, pain, tension, joy — and that sensitivity is not a flaw. It’s a powerful part of who you are. But if you grew up with a narcissistic or emotionally immature parent, or experienced a challenging relationship...your sensitivity may have felt like a burden, something you were punished for rather than protected in. You might have been the emotional caretaker, the peacekeeper, the one who sensed everything — and carried more than your fair share. As an HSP myself, I know how overwhelming the world can feel, especially when your nervous system has been shaped by childhood dynamics that taught you to walk on eggshells. The constant overthinking, the guilt, the deep empathy that sometimes leaves you drained — it’s a lot. And you deserve support that sees all of that clearly and honors it. In our work together, we’ll create a calm, compassionate space where you don’t have to tone yourself down or explain why something hurt. We’ll gently untangle old survival patterns, explore what safety and boundaries really feel like for you, and help you come home to your sensitivity — not as something to fix, but as something to protect and cherish. You are not too much. You were just given too little support for how deeply you feel. That can change — and I’d be honored to walk with you as it does.

Los Angeles, California therapist: Aaron Kapin, somatic experiencing practitioner
Highly Sensitive Person

Aaron Kapin

Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, LMT
From one highly sensitive person to another, it can be a crazy world out there. Two things that I've found helpful: 1st, resiliency training: Although our bodies can react to things that other people might brush off, Somatic Experiencing can help build up our ability to settle our stress and activation levels. That party might still be uncomfortably loud, but it's more tolerable when you have confidence that you can quickly find comfort again once you leave. 2nd: Boundary training and asking for what you want: As we get better at knowing what would help us feel more comfortable, and better at asking for it, we can start to re-shape our environment to feel better. Then as we feel better, and as our loved ones know how to help us, we are more resourceful, more able to connect with others, and more able to be the people we want to be in the world.

The work is to help understand and embrace deep emotional and sensory responsiveness as a trait, not a flaw. Building emotional regulation, healthy boundaries and strategies to prevent overwhelm, without shutting down sensitivity is critical.
