Many people exploring trauma therapy come across both Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and EMDR. These two approaches share some similarities, but they offer very different experiences in session.
ART uses structured eye movements, imagery techniques, and memory reconsolidation to help the brain reduce distress quickly. Many people appreciate that ART doesn’t require retelling the trauma in detail and often creates noticeable relief in fewer sessions.
EMDR also uses eye movements but follows a slower, more verbal, eight-phase protocol. It can be helpful for people who prefer talking through their experiences and want a more gradual pace.
Both methods can support healing, but the style and tempo feel different for each person. If someone wants fast relief with a more guided structure, ART is often the better fit. If someone prefers more conversation and exploration, EMDR may be more comfortable.
I use ART as part of an integrative trauma-therapy approach, and many clients find it effective for both single-event trauma and long-standing emotional patterns.
