Treatment Approach

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Feminist Therapy Addresses how gender roles, power, and social inequality affect mental health. It empowers clients to challenge limiting beliefs and systems.
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy Based on decades of research, this method gives couples tools to improve communication, manage conflict, and strengthen intimacy.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Combines mindfulness practices with CBT to prevent depression relapse. It helps people notice thoughts without judgment and respond more calmly.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.

Kai DeMaeyer, Talk with Kai Psychotherapy Practice Details

Therapy Sessions Kai DeMaeyer, Talk with Kai Psychotherapy Practice Description
Some things are hard to name out loud. A relationship that keeps hitting the same wall. A body that doesn't cooperate. Intimacy that has become harder to reach than it used to be. An identity that still doesn't have room in conversations. Exhaustion that lives deeper than sleep can reach. I work with individuals and couples carrying the kinds of experiences that don't resolve cleanly: trauma, chronic illness, grief, intimacy and relational conflict, identity, and neurodivergence. A lot of my clients have spent a long time analyzing something that needed a different kind of attention. My approach draws on Psychodynamic, IFS, EFT, Narrative, the Gottman Method, and somatic-informed practice. In plain terms, that means we work with patterns, not just symptoms. With your nervous system and your relational history, not just what happened. And at a pace that actually makes room for the parts of the work that are harder to rush. I am queer, nonbinary, and neurodivergent. I'm also direct, trauma-informed, sex-positive and consent-led. If you have spent time in spaces where you managed yourself carefully to be understood or accepted, this is not that kind of space. Reach out when you're ready. You don't need a clear picture of what you need yet.
