Toronto, Ontario therapist: Nora Taylor, MA, RP, registered psychotherapist
Women's Issues

Nora Taylor, MA, RP

Registered Psychotherapist, Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology 1994
I completed my dissertation in 1996 while living in California; the topic of my paper was Women's Experience of the Descent into the Unconscious. Descent means a drop into the unconscious where we can experience a shattering or unravelling of our inner structure or identity. This inner collapse is usually experienced as a crisis and is mirrored in the external world as our life falls apart. This can leave us bereft of any sense of stability or sense of self. It can be abrupt or a slow unravelling that takes place over time where we notice a loss in vitality and spontaneity and increasing levels of depression and/or anxiety. Unrecognized and unattended, it can lead to feelings of hopelessness, a loss of confidence and increasing difficulties coping with life.

Women go through a unique set of challenges physically and emotionally and on top of that we battle with messages that communicate societal expectations from how our personality and body should be and look, to how we manage our societal and family roles and life transitions. I find this is a set up for negative thoughts and emotions that in turn get in the way of navigating these issues. I'd be happy to help you as I have many women find a path through.

Franklynn Bartol

My clients are often navigating dynamics within familial, romantic, work, and parent-child relationships that are shaped by gender. I'm currently part way through a PhD in Women & Gender Studies, so the issues that impact women, trans people, and gender minorities are especially important to me. My studies have focused on feminist and anti-racist forms of therapy, so I'll draw on both of these to understand your experiences. Having worked in many 2SLGBTQ+ support spaces, I've learned a lot about the diverse ways sexism, homophobia, and transphobia can impact people's lives. Other issues women and trans clients often want to process include gender roles in relationships, families, and work; sex and sexuality; exploring gender identity and expression, such as what femininity and masculinity mean for them; experiences of gender dysphoria or euphoria; transitioning; coming out; self-empowerment; and finding community.

I specialize in empowering women to navigate the unique challenges of womanhood—from societal expectations and roles to major life transitions—through an integrative, client-centered approach. We’ll use acceptance and commitment therapy to clarify your values, mindfulness-based techniques to cultivate self-compassion, and parts work to harmonize conflicting inner voices, while cognitive-behavioural and emotion-focused methods help you challenge unhelpful beliefs and process deep emotions. When necessary, I draw on spiritual/existential approaches to honour your inner wisdom. Together, we’ll build resilience, autonomy, and authentic self-expression in a safe, supportive space.

Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and its therapy landscape reflects this extraordinary diversity, with practitioners representing hundreds of cultural backgrounds and dozens of languages. The city's high cost of living and intensely competitive professional environment drive demand for therapists addressing financial anxiety, burnout, and the psychological pressures of ambitious urban life. CAMH — the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health — is Canada's largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, providing major institutional resources alongside Toronto's vast private practice and counselling community. Ontario's OHIP coverage is limited for psychotherapy, so many residents use extended health benefits or pay out of pocket to access private therapy.
