From Skeptic to Convert – A Case Study

Emma Dean

He came to me as a complete skeptic. Therapy, hypnotherapy, breathwork—it all sounded a bit “out there” to him. It was a family member who suggested he book a call with me.

His main struggles were anxiety, constant self-consciousness, and a relentless inner critic that made him feel like he wasn’t good enough. He constantly worried that people were judging him and doubted his own abilities, especially in his work and business. His heart would race and his body would sweat and shake. He felt a deep sense of shame around his anxiety, which only made it worse.

At first, he wasn’t sure anything could help, he had tried reading self-help books but hadn’t managed to overcome his struggles – but over the course of just four sessions, everything shifted.

Understanding the Problem

Anxiety can make even small decisions feel overwhelming, and self-consciousness can prevent us from showing up fully in life. For this client, the inner critic was a loud, constant voice telling him he wasn’t enough. Every step forward in his business felt risky, and every social interaction felt scrutinised.

These are struggles many people face—but they often think, “I just have to live with this,” or feel skeptical that therapy can truly help. Just reaching out for help can feel like a huge step to take.

The Approach

We worked together using a combination of techniques designed to address anxiety, self-doubt, and inner criticism:

Hypnotherapy to create deep relaxation and shift limiting beliefs.
Breathwork to manage anxiety in the moment and bring calm to the nervous system. Inner critic and inner child work to understand the origins of self-doubt and reframe the narrative that was holding him back. Each session built on the last, and the client quickly began to notice shifts—not just in his thinking, but in how he felt in his body, and how he showed up in life. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approaches helped him to stop seeing his anxiety as a problem and to accept difficult thoughts and feelings without rejecting this part of himself. When we can fully accept all of our parts with compassion, we are able to consciously work with them to find freedom from within.

The sessions took place online, from the comfort of his home, and he listened to his recordings and used the techniques I taught him between sessions.

The Transformation

By the end of just four sessions, he felt like he had his life back. His anxiety had lessened, he was back in control, the inner critic was quieter, and he was able to approach work, social situations, and his business with confidence. He wasn’t just coping anymore—he was taking meaningful steps forward, feeling capable and empowered. He also began to talk about things with his family and community, helping others and having a real positive impact on those around him.

From a skeptic to someone who now trusts in the process and in himself, his journey is a reminder that even a few focused sessions can create profound change.
