Ajay Sahota
Counsellor/Therapist, MA, RCC (Registered Clinical Counsellor)
LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, +) persons may encounter specific challenges (e.g., oppression and discrimination) related to their sexual orientation. These challenges may include norms and beliefs of family members, friends, church, and cultural customs. Social and cultural norms sometimes conflict with your own values, that of other cultures you belong to, and a sense of who you are.
Some communities maintain entrenched beliefs and stereotypes of LGBTQ+ persons. In those cases, there may be resistance to accept you because you do not meet certain cultural expectations. As a result, a LGBTQ+ person may feel shame, and low self-esteem and self-worth. These feelings can lead to depression and anxiety and you may withdraw from others to protect yourself from hurt and feel lonely at the same time.
When you grow up around negative attitudes or discrimination against a group people for their sexuality or gender, it may also be difficult to accept and express yourself for who you truly are. You may find it difficult to be curious about, and explore, your sexuality and identity. As a South Asian born man (he/him) in a second-generation immigrant family in Canada, I understand some of the complexities of culture, sexuality, and gender expression.
I am excited to support you on this journey. I celebrate and stand with you as a LGBTQ+ person.

Kai DeMaeyer, Talk with Kai Psychotherapy
Registered Psychotherapist, MACP, RP (Q)
Queer and trans clients shouldn't need to spend therapy time explaining their lives to someone who's still catching up. I'm queer and nonbinary myself, and I work with 2SLGBTQ+ clients on identity, relationships, family, sexuality, and the specific kind of exhaustion that comes from navigating a world not built for you. This is a practice where you can take that particular weight off.

Navigating a world built on cisnormative structures means that dealing with LGBTQ+ issues is often an exhausting exercise in daily survival, but therapy should also be a space to cultivate gender euphoria. I arrive at this work with you with my own lived experience as a genderflux, queer femme (she/they). My virtual counselling practice in Vancouver, BC and across Canada offers a deeply affirming, non-gatekeeping space where you never have to translate your identity to be understood. We will work relationally to hold the weight of systemic macro-aggressions, fostering a slow, embodied space of absolute resonance and solidarity.

Vancouver's extreme housing affordability crisis has become a defining mental health issue, with therapists frequently addressing financial stress, housing precarity, and the grief of displacement from a city many can no longer afford to stay in. The city's large East Asian community — particularly its Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and South Asian populations — drives demand for culturally fluent therapists who can navigate family dynamics, immigration stress, and the intersection of cultural expectations with individual wellbeing. BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services provides institutional support, while Vancouver's large private therapy community is concentrated in Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Commercial Drive, and the West End. BC's expanded telehealth access makes it easier to connect with therapists across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.
