Since I am not a licensed therapist, I'm not allowed to diagnose conditions such as Depression. This is a term that is often thrown around quite readily and clients often state they suffer from depression, whether or not they have been formally diagnosed by a therapist in the past. Generally, it is a rather broad diagnosis covering a wide range of behaviors. For hypnotists, many of these behaviors are simply a negative habit of mind that we can change, neutralizing many of the past traumas that have led to their problems. I have worked with many such clients, however. In many cases my clients have been in therapy for years, even decades, and while they understood the roots of their feelings, they got no relief. One of my earliest clients was a woman who suffered tremendous emotional abuse as a child and grew up with a crushing feeling of worthlessness. She became grossly overweight and worked at menial jobs her whole life, unable to form any successful and satisfying relationships. Through hypnosis, she was able to lose 170 pounds and after one session focused on her past trauma, she was so lightened of her lifelong burden of self loathing that she practically floated out of my office and she insisted on paying me double my fee. She has been free of her burdens now for 5 years and comes in once a year for a refresher session. I have had many such results in my practice.

Depression can place significant strain on a relationship, often leading to disconnection, communication challenges, increased conflict, or feelings of isolation for both partners. This is exactly at a time when people are actually needing greater connection. Through the Gottman Method, couples therapy helps partners better understand how depression impacts the relationship dynamic while strengthening emotional support, communication, and support. Therapy focuses on creating a secure and compassionate partnership, helping couples navigate difficult emotions together rather than feeling alone in them. By building healthier patterns of interaction and emotional responsiveness, couples are more resilient.

Orem, Utah therapist: Alina Hovsoyan, licensed clinical social worker
Depression

Alina Hovsoyan

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
Supporting clients with depression involves providing empathetic, nonjudgmental support while helping them understand and manage their symptoms. This includes validating their feelings, educating them about how depression affects thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and exploring treatment options such as therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. Clients are guided in building coping skills, including cognitive-behavioral techniques to challenge negative thinking, behavioral activation to engage in meaningful activities, and mindfulness or relaxation exercises to manage stress and rumination. Setting small, achievable goals and celebrating progress helps foster motivation and a sense of accomplishment, while regular assessment of safety and development of a crisis plan ensures that clients have strategies and support in place if suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges arise.

Depression is very common, yet the origins and its presentation can be variable. We can explore what methodologies are a best fit for you. Typically, I find psychodynamic talk therapy to be useful as we work collaboratively to develop insight and understanding. Cognitive behavioral therapy can provide us many strategies and new perspectives. Acceptance and commitment therapy helps us to think flexibly and make choices that are aligned with our values.

Depression can feel like moving through life with a weight you can’t put down. Even simple things — getting out of bed, making decisions, finding motivation — can feel overwhelming. Many of my clients push themselves to achieve and hold everything together on the outside, but inside they feel empty, numb, or deeply tired. In therapy, we slow down and explore not just the symptoms, but the hidden roots of your pain. Over time, you can begin to feel lighter, more connected to yourself, and able to experience real joy again.
