As a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in emotional abuse, I provide compassionate and effective treatment to address emotional trauma. My approach, informed by evidence-based therapies, is tailored to meet each individual's unique needs. Trauma can stem from any stressful event that threatens your safety, triggering emotional, psychological, or physical responses that deeply affect your mental health. Emotional abuse can be difficult to recognize, particularly when criticism, control, manipulation, gaslighting, or coercion have gradually become normalized within a relationship. I help clients make sense of what they have experienced, rebuild trust in their own perceptions, and understand the patterns that may continue affecting self-worth, boundaries, and relationships. Therapy provides space to process the impact of these experiences while developing greater autonomy, self-trust, and confidence in deciding what healthy relationships look like for you.

Louis Hoffman

Psychologist, PhD
Emotional abuse can profoundly affect our sense of self-acceptance, trust, emotional well-being, and ability to form healthy relationships. Its effects are often difficult to recognize, particularly when patterns of manipulation, criticism, control, or invalidation have developed gradually over time. I provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where clients can explore their experiences, process painful emotions, and begin to rebuild trust in themselves and others. My approach emphasizes understanding the impact of these experiences without defining individuals by what they have endured. I work with clients toward strengthening personal boundaries, reclaiming autonomy, fostering self-compassion, and developing healthier, more authentic relationships.

Emotional abuse is as dangerous, and in some ways more dangerous than physical. Physical abuse can break bones, leave bruises, but emotional abuse leaves scars that no-one sees and are harder to understand. The feelings are often the same from not feeling safe, feelings of isolation and walking on eggshells, but it is often harder for the individual to comprehend and much more difficult to share. This type of abuse can occur in any type of relationship (romantic, friend or family). Working through this will help you learn to feel, to trust your feelings, to learn to value yourself and to gain back control of your world.

Probably emotional neglect or the lack of adequately nurturing is the least recognized and validated for of developmental or marital abuse. Looking at attachment style can often help you to understand how this neglect occurred and what you need to heal. Maybe negative thoughts intrude on your thought process. There are many approaches that work for this, depending upon your needs.

Emotional abuse doesn't always leave a mark you can point to, which is part of why it's so hard to name. I help you trust what you actually experienced, understand how it shaped the way you relate to yourself and other people now, and work through it at a pace your nervous system can actually handle.

Yardley, Pennsylvania therapist: Sabina Mauro, psychologist
Emotional Abuse

Sabina Mauro

Psychologist, PsyD
Emotional abuse does not always leave visible scars, but its impact can shape how you see yourself, navigate relationships, and experience the world. Over time, criticism, manipulation, invalidation, or controlling behaviors can lead you to question your own perceptions, needs, and worth. My work focuses on helping individuals recognize these patterns, understand how past experiences may influence present relationships, and begin rebuilding trust in themselves. Through a compassionate, trauma-informed approach, we work toward strengthening boundaries, restoring confidence, and reconnecting with the parts of yourself that may have been overshadowed by the experiences of abuse. Healing is not about changing who you are, but rediscovering who you have always been.

Unfortunately, more people that we would like to admit have suffered emotional abuse and it has affected their lives negatively. It is at the root of many issues that people come to me for, even if they don't realize it. When we do our initial detailed intake interview, these things quickly come to light. Hypnosis is a powerful tool for resolving or neutralizing past hurts and trauma. many of my clients have continued to suffer, even as traditional therapy has failed to give them relief. Usually, one or two sessions of hypnosis are enough to resolve their trauma and free them. As they emerge from trance, the change is visible as they seem lighter, happier, more relaxed, their faces smoother as the tension leaves their bodies.
