Dr. Susan L. Waldo

Psychologist, PhD
My online psychotherapy practice works very much the same way that my in person practice did. On the Simple Practice and Zoom platforms, clients use the link I provide to enter the waiting room and join our session. Clients and I find that we feel very connected and are able to intensely focus on healing during our time together. Following the session, if needed, I provide therapy tools, recommendations, and reminders from our session by text or email.

Many people wonder how Expressive Arts Therapy works online. Through my experience I can say that it truly does. Schema Therapy is highly engaging. You won't glaze over with my online therapy, that's for sure! I get you often out of your seat and into "schema mode chairs", "chair dialogues", and guided imagery exercises. It's not simply a cognitive approach, but experiential, to enable you to experience a difference right in the session. With your feedback we team up as equals. I am here to help you, and I have years of experience, both in seeing clients and training other therapists. As a senior psychologist, I have been seeing clients online for years prior to the pandemic situation, so I am comfortable with this venue. I see clients right in my office through telepsychology, so there is privacy on my end and a secure and familiar base. I am also part of an online international group of psychologists and therapists that work together to examine best practices and treatment interventions that work well online for individuals and couples. I use a HIPPA secure video-conferencing platform (doxy.me) and when we speak we will discuss your situation and symptoms and I'll be able to see if this venue is appropriate for you. I also offer secure, end to end encrypted email for passing on therapy handouts as needed, and I usually provide you with many therapy aids and homework! I work to keep you on track between sessions. You may wish to check out "ProtonMail", and sign up for a free account. In addition, if you prefer to use a credit card, I can process that at your online session time and email you your receipt. I see clients from all over Wisconsin and Virginia, the two states I am licensed in, and I give you each my effort and significant focus, both in session and in preparation for it. You'll be amazed how natural online work feels, and enables us to really be connected with a few ways that we structure it. As the founder of a professional group that is part of the International Society of Schema Therapy, I respect the multi-cultural, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic aspects that affect my clients so as to provide best outcomes in therapy. With this in mind, I work with clients from all faith backgrounds, religions and diverse perspectives, however, for those who do have some belief that God's hand is in their life, may you be blessed and guided! Dr. Chiara

I have started offering teletherapy in addition to in-person appointments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but plan to continue for the convenience of therapy clients even after the pandemic ends. Teletherapy has proven to be a viable and effective option for clients who otherwise for various reasons would not be able to access therapy services in person.

With technology, you can experience all the benefits of in-person therapy on secure, easy-to-use, high-quality internet platforms. Online sessions allow you to do therapy in the comfort of your own home or allow you flexibility in environments that best suit you. It can be especially helpful to those who find it challenging to travel to an office for appointments due to location, work, children at home, lifestyle, or other practical or personal reasons. While there are multiple ways that counseling can take place online, I work primarily with face-to-face video conferencing via Zoom and, on occasion, telephone sessions. I always hold my sessions in a quiet and confidential space, giving you the same confidentiality & professionalism that you experience within an office setting. Most, if not all, of my clients, find virtual sessions to be highly effective and convenient. They allow for the comfort and safety of therapy in your own space, and no travel time is often less vulnerable than needing to go to an office. Research of multiple studies finds that online therapy is equally effective as in-person for most cases. That being said I always advocate for what works best for each individual and it is wonderful to have choices to find your best path whichever that may be. If you are not super-computer savvy or are anxious about how to use technology, I will work to make it as seamless as possible. I have chosen a platform that is easy to use and I am happy to assist you with any questions or concerns. A common concern I hear from clients regarding online therapy is finding a quiet and/or confidential space when you’re homebound with children and/or family members or roommates. Be sure and scope this out in advance so you are guaranteed quiet and privacy during your session. Since it is so convenient many times people forget to allow themselves a few minutes to "switch hats" and allow themselves a few breaths and get settled into being present and in the head/body space for your session. Headphones or Airpods can often make audio clearer or ensure more privacy but are not necessary. Given that video sessions can be conducted on your smartphone, clients have found it helpful to go to a park, sit in their car in the driveway, and/or walk around your neighborhood. Get creative and support yourself. Find a private space that allows you to receive support no matter where you are. You are welcome to have pets join your space if you find that comforting, and supporting, and you may see my fellow feline/canine therapists join in one of our sessions on my end.

Asking for help is challenging enough, and I believe that the online format removes some of the other stressors normally associated with beginning therapy. One of the most important "ingredients" for success in therapy is feeling comfortable in the therapy setting. With online therapy, clients enjoy the convenience of meeting with me from wherever they feel most comfortable. Online therapy also eliminates the need for a commute to an office or sitting in a waiting area. With some of the stress eliminated, we can really get to work!
