High standards can be useful until mistakes feel intolerable, accomplishments never feel sufficient, or self-worth becomes tied to performance. Therapy can help clients recognize rigid patterns, respond differently to uncertainty and imperfection, and pursue meaningful goals without being governed by constant self-criticism.

Perfectionism

Aryn Ziehnert

Psychologist, Ph.D.
Perfectionism is often praised by the world, but from the inside, it can feel like living with an unrelenting driver that never lets you rest. It keeps you caught in cycles of overworking, fear of failure, procrastination, and a quiet sense that nothing you do is ever quite enough. In our work together, we view perfectionism not as a character flaw, but as a protective armor you built to stay safe or earn approval. Using a compassionate, evidence-based approach, we will work to quiet your harsh inner critic, untangle your self-worth from your productivity, and build a sustainable relationship with success where you can strive for excellence without sacrificing your peace.

Perfectionism

Kristina Young

Therapist, LCMFT
Whether you live with a great deal of perfectionism as a result of suspected OCD, established OCD, or as a stand-alone experience, you're likely feeling hemmed in and weighed down by the weight of your own expectations and/ or standards. Late stage perfectionism is a heavy burden to carry and has a way of making your life feel increasingly constricted. However, perfectionistic parts of ourselves are usually active for a reason- together, we can gently uncover the roots of your perfectionistic part(s), understand them better, and shift them into less extreme roles so that you can live more expansively and, dare I say, imperfectly.

Closter, New Jersey therapist: Karen Nadel, psychologist
Perfectionism

Karen Nadel

Psychologist, Psy.D.
Perfectionism can be exhausting. The pressure to do everything exactly right, meet impossibly high standards, or avoid making mistakes can leave you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or never quite good enough. In therapy, I help clients understand the beliefs and fears that drive perfectionism, while developing a more flexible and compassionate relationship with themselves. Together, we work on challenging all-or-nothing thinking, reducing self-criticism, and learning to tolerate uncertainty and mistakes without feeling that everything is at risk. Treatment may also include practical strategies for managing procrastination, overthinking, and the difficulty of feeling satisfied with accomplishments. The goal is not to give up your ambition or high standards, but to help you pursue what matters to you without being controlled by the need to be perfect.

Perfectionism

Melanie Collins

Licensed Professional Counselor, LCPC, LPC, LCMHC, Coach
Perfectionism often looks like high standards from the outside while feeling like relentless pressure on the inside. It can show up as overthinking, procrastination, people-pleasing, fear of mistakes, difficulty resting, or the persistent sense that whatever you do is never quite enough. I help clients understand what drives these patterns, loosen the connection between performance and self-worth, and develop standards that support growth without requiring constant self-criticism. The goal isn’t to stop caring about doing things well—it’s to make “good enough” actually feel good enough.

Perfectionism can look like high achievement from the outside while feeling exhausting on the inside. If your self-worth has become tied to productivity, achievement, or getting things exactly right, therapy can help you understand where these expectations come from and loosen their hold. We can work toward greater self-compassion, flexibility, and a sense of worth that does not depend on constant performance.

Perfectionism

Perfectionism can create a persistent sense of pressure to meet unrealistic expectations, often accompanied by self-criticism, anxiety, shame, and a fear of failure or disappointing others. While striving for excellence can be meaningful, perfectionism can interfere with our ability to experience satisfaction, authenticity, and genuine connection with others. I help individuals explore the underlying beliefs, experiences, and relational patterns that contribute to perfectionistic tendencies. Together, we examine how self-worth may become tied to achievement, approval, or control while developing greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and acceptance of our human limitations. My goal is to help clients move beyond rigid expectations toward a more balanced, authentic, and fulfilling way of living that allows room for growth, vulnerability, and imperfection.

Psychologist, PsyD
Perfectionism can look like ambition, high standards, or simply wanting to do things well. But underneath the drive to get everything right can be a persistent fear of failure, criticism, disappointment, or not being enough. You may find yourself overthinking decisions, setting unrealistic expectations, being highly self-critical, or feeling that no matter what you accomplish, it is never quite enough. You may have learned to measure your worth by your productivity, success, appearance, relationships, or ability to meet the expectations of others. I work with individuals who struggle with perfectionism to understand where these patterns come from and how they may be affecting the way they experience themselves and their lives. Together, we explore the core beliefs and internal expectations that fuel the need to be perfect and examine how those beliefs influence your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and choices. Using cognitive behavioral, emotion-focused, mindfulness-based, and strength-based approaches, I help you develop a more compassionate and realistic relationship with yourself. We work on challenging all-or-nothing thinking, tolerating uncertainty and mistakes, and separating your sense of self-worth from your accomplishments. The goal is not to make you care less or give up the qualities that have helped you succeed. Rather, it is to help you pursue what matters to you without being driven by fear, self-criticism, or the belief that you must be perfect to be worthy. You don't have to choose between striving for meaningful goals and being at peace with yourself. Therapy can help you create a healthier balance—one where you can achieve, grow, and succeed while also allowing yourself to be human.

Dr. Jason Wang, Inflection Points Therapy

Psychologist, PhD
Perfectionism can fuel achievement, persistence, and attention to detail, and it is often rewarded in demanding academic and professional environments. Over time, however, unrelenting standards, fear of mistakes, overwork, self-criticism, or tying your worth to your performance can become exhausting and unsustainable. A setback, transition, increased responsibility, or period of burnout may eventually make it impossible to keep meeting the expectations you have set for yourself. When strategies that once helped you succeed stop working, it can feel as though your competence, identity, or life is beginning to unravel. Working on perfectionism does not mean giving up ambition or settling for less. Therapy can help you understand what drives your perfectionism, distinguish meaningful striving from fear-based pressure, develop more flexible expectations, and respond to mistakes or limitations with greater perspective and self-compassion. The goal is to help you pursue excellence in ways that are healthier, more sustainable, and less dependent on relentless self-criticism.

Perfectionism can create constant pressure to perform, anticipate, and prevent mistakes, often leaving little room for rest or self-compassion. Many women find themselves trapped in cycles of striving that feel productive on the surface but exhausting underneath. In therapy, we work to understand how these patterns developed and build more flexible ways of responding to expectations so that your sense of worth is not tied to constant output.

You may be accomplished, dependable, and highly capable, yet rarely feel satisfied with what you do. Mistakes can feel disproportionately threatening, rest can bring guilt, and even meaningful achievements may provide only brief relief before the next internal imperative takes over. I work with high achievers who are tired of being driven by self-criticism, fear of failure, or the feeling that they must continually prove their worth. Rather than simply trying to counteract perfectionist urges, we explore what perfectionism has come to mean and what it helps you avoid or protect against. The goal is to preserve your ambition while loosening the grip of the inner critic, so that your effort becomes a value-driven choice rather than a condition you use to determine your worth.

If you hold yourself to very high standards yet rarely feel satisfied with your efforts, perfectionism may be driving constant pressure beneath the surface. While striving for excellence can be a strength, perfectionism often brings self-criticism, worry about mistakes, and difficulty slowing down. Therapy focuses on understanding these patterns and developing healthier ways to pursue high standards without the chronic strain.

Perfectionism is not really about high standards — it is about what you believe will happen if you fall short. The clients I see with perfectionism are usually accomplished and exhausted, unable to enjoy what they have done because attention moves straight to the next thing, and privately convinced the whole structure depends on their vigilance. Rather than trying to talk you out of your standards, I am interested in where they came from, whose approval they were originally for, and what they have protected you from feeling. Self-acceptance does more for functioning than self-criticism ever has, but it cannot be adopted on command — it develops through being understood.

Perfectionism is not really about high standards. It is about safety. Somewhere along the way, the subconscious decided that being good enough, being beyond criticism or being in complete control was the way to be safe and accepted. That decision then becomes a daily tax: overworking, second-guessing, never quite arriving. RTT goes back to the moment that decision was made and updates the meaning underneath it. The standards can stay. What changes is the price you pay to meet them. Most of my perfectionist clients are women in leadership, founders or creatives. The work is online via Zoom and confidential.
