Ekta Abhay Lather
Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Psychotherapist
Chronic pain is a challenging and often overwhelming condition that can deeply affect your life. It is characterized by persistent discomfort lasting longer than three months, even after injuries or underlying issues have healed. This pain can arise from various conditions, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or neuropathy, and it can significantly diminish your quality of life.
If you are living with chronic pain, you might find yourself facing physical limitations, emotional distress, and difficulties with daily activities. This can create a frustrating cycle that often leads to feelings of isolation.
It's important to know that you are not alone in this struggle. Managing chronic pain frequently requires a holistic approach, which may include medical treatments, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and emotional support. Finding coping strategies, like mindfulness practices and stress management techniques, can be vital in helping you regain a sense of control and improve your overall well-being. Remember, taking small steps toward management can make a big difference in your journey.

Marjan Emami
Counsellor/Therapist, MD, RTC #3608, MPCC-Provisional #4797, ACTA #3122
Chronic pain and illness often reflect unresolved emotional trauma, where repressed emotions and chronic stress can rewire the nervous system. In my approach, we explore the root of the pain to identify the emotions that have not been fully expressed or processed. By focusing on the whole person, not just the symptoms, we work on cultivating self-compassion, emotional awareness, and reconnecting the mind and body.

Arne Pedersen - Hypnotherapy Victoria
Hypnotherapist, RCCH
Living with chronic pain or long-term illness can be physically exhausting and emotionally overwhelming. Beyond the symptoms themselves, many people find their nervous system becomes stuck in a state of vigilance, tension, or struggle, making it difficult for the body to rest, regulate, and heal.
From a mindfulness-based perspective, pain is often understood as the body’s way of communicating that something needs attention or change. When signals from the body are ignored or pushed through over time, the nervous system may respond by amplifying those signals — not as punishment, but as an attempt to be heard and protected.
Thoughts, emotions, and perception also play an important role. Ongoing fear, resistance, pessimism, or self-judgment can be reflected in the body as tension and unease, much like waking from a bad dream with the body still holding fear. Over time, this lack of internal ease can interrupt the body’s natural flow and regulation, contributing to persistent pain.
Chronic pain also commonly goes hand-in-hand with disrupted or poor-quality sleep. When the body doesn’t have enough opportunity to rest deeply, its ability to repair, replenish, and heal is reduced, which can further reinforce pain and fatigue.
In our work together, the focus is on gently restoring a sense of safety, awareness, and ease within the body. Through mindfulness practices, breath awareness, and body-based attention, clients learn how to relate differently to physical sensations, reduce resistance, and support the nervous system in settling.
Hypnotherapy can further support this process by helping update subconscious protective patterns and creating felt experiences of calm and safety that also support more restorative rest. While this work does not replace medical care, many people find that as regulation improves, both pain and sleep begin to shift in more supportive ways.
