What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy? A Simple Overview

Brent Peak

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a trauma-focused approach that uses guided eye movements and imagery techniques to help the brain reduce the emotional impact of painful memories. One thing people appreciate about ART is that you don’t have to retell the details of the trauma in order for it to work. The process is structured, gentle, and often creates relief more quickly than traditional approaches.

In an ART session, the therapist guides you through a series of eye movements while you focus on a specific memory, sensation, or emotional response. As the distress decreases, the brain “updates” the way the memory is stored, making it feel less overwhelming. Clients often report that they can remember what happened but no longer feel the same physical or emotional reaction.

ART has been helpful for single-event trauma, anxiety, panic, disturbing images, and stress responses tied to past experiences. Many people choose it because it’s time-efficient, highly structured, and allows them to work at a pace that feels safe.
