Signs You May Be Experiencing Vicarious Trauma
You work with people carrying heavy stories. But are you carrying them too? Vicarious trauma happens when you absorb the trauma of the people you serve. If you’re a caseworker, social worker, nurse, or frontline worker, this might feel familiar:
Common signs:
-Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
-Hypervigilance: constantly on edge
-Difficulty sleeping or intrusive thoughts about clients’ experiences
-Loss of hope or increased cynicism -Difficulty separating work from personal life
-Physical symptoms (tension, headaches, exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest)
Here’s what’s important: Vicarious trauma isn’t weakness. It’s not a sign you can’t handle the work. It’s your nervous system telling you it needs support. The difference between burnout and vicarious trauma can be subtle, but both need the same thing: a space to process what you’ve been holding. If any of this resonates, you don’t have to keep carrying it alone.
